Five Facts About Steel You Probably Didn’t Know

Steel is one of the world’s most valuable commodities and is used in everything from construction projects to cargo ships and washing machines. In fact, the material has become an essential part of the modern world. While it is likely that you have heard of the metal, there are probably a number of surprising facts that you do not know about steel construction.

We thought we would explore five of the most interesting facts about steel construction that you probably did not know:

Steel is one of the world’s most recycled materials

Everyone understands the importance of lowering their carbon footprint and recycling the products that we use is a crucial part of doing this. Thankfully steel is one of the most recycled materials in the world, with estimates showing that around 85% of the steel in the world is recycled.

This not only ensures that it can be reused, but for every tonne of steel that is recycled, 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal and 120 pounds of limestone are saved.

Steel maintains its strength

Another reason steel construction is so popular is that it maintains its strength even after being recycled. Steel is 1,000 times stronger than iron in its purest form, and when recycled, it will retain that strength. Steel can even be made stronger through a process known as galvanising.

Steel plays an essential role in sustainability

When you think of steel construction, towering skyscrapers are often the first thing that comes to mind. However, steel also plays a vital role in the development of a sustainable economy, particularly in the construction and delivery of solar, hydro and wind power development, such as turbines and solar panels.

Steel has been around for millennia

While steel plays a vital role in the modern world, the material has actually been used for thousands of years. One of the first recorded instances of the material dates back over 4,000 years to Turkey.

Steel employs a lot of people

With it being used in such a huge array of industries, it might now come as a little surprise to find out just how many people work directly within the production and distribution of steel. Recent surveys have shown that there are around six million people employed globally within the industry.
