The sculpture serves as a permanent tribute to the County’s links to Bomber Command and the RAF during World War Two. Lincolnshire was home to 40 RAF bases during the war and is known as “Bomber County.”
The Lancaster is sited between Lincoln and Newark on the side of the A46, positioned on the border of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Around 34,000 motorists pass by it daily.
The model has a structural steel skeleton clad in Cor-Ten steel, a weathering steel that develops a protective rust surface. This gives it a realistic appearance that matches the original Lancaster’s markings as it ages naturally.
The sculpture is 26 metres long with a 31 metre wingspan and stands 29 metres tall, weighing approximately 100 tonnes.
